The love story between a young romantic poet and a Quetzal. It is set in a small village near the tropical rain forest in Oaxaca, southern Mexico. There is a mysterious wise old poet who also has a story to tell. And a beautiful Quetzal that is madly in love with our singing , lonely poet.
Many of their friends on both sides are against the love and some try to destroy it. This is a story of love for the people of Mexico.
Come enjoy the magic with us.
The inspiration
The glorious music of Eduardo Angulo and our love of Mexico has been our artistic inspiration.
Libretto Peterman/Sotomayor is a collaboration between Brian Peterman, Canada and Manuel Sotomayor, Guadalajara, Mexico.
We have worked together to create some very beautiful songs.
The composer
Eduardo Angulo is our destiny composer. Within several of his existing works lays the foundation for Quetzal y El Poeta. The story, the songs , everything emerged from the music. I only had to listen. http://eduardoangulo.com/
Quetzal began in January 2019. I began by listening to all of Eduardo's music and refining to all that had danceable melodies. Melodies give something for the mind to hang on to and remember. With that attachment the audience can follow the story. It took me almost 6 months of daily listening to get the music into a dance playlist
From that began a year of listening to the music and finding the story, The idea of a Queztal came from a piece that sounded like parrots.
Then came the great songs translated by Manuel Sotomayor. a year putting all that together and then a year of voice lessons for the dancers during the pandemic.. We premiered the Ballet with songs in August 2021 in Mexico City. From the videos we are not turning it into a full Mexican Musical, More songs , a chorus, fewer dancers.
It's going to be sensational. There has never been a great Mexican Musical.
The choreographers
Pako Magvez, Mexico City contemporary/jazz did the original choreography and then we transition to Noe Sedeno from Xalapa for Folkloric/ballet final. Noe was also the choreographer for my first ballet on stage, Catrina dia de Muertos
